The Bridge

Don’t make spirituality into another hiding place.

It’s surprisingly easy to do.

Meditate.
Read beautiful books.
Talk about presence.
Quote mystics.
Light a candle.

Feel peaceful…

as long as nobody interrupts you.

Then Monday morning arrives.

Traffic.
Emails.
Politics.
Conflict.
Children crying.
A difficult colleague.
A grieving friend.

And suddenly your spirituality evaporates.

It was never tested.

You weren’t awakened.

You were comfortable.

Isaiah speaks into a broken world and says:

“You shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to dwell in.”

Do you hear that?

Not the observer.

Not the commentator.

The repairer.

Then Jesus prays something extraordinary:

“I do not ask that you take them out of the world… As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.”

Into the world.

Not away from it.

Not above it.

Into it.

Into the noise.
Into the mess.
Into the heartbreak.
Into the beauty.
Into humanity.

The spiritual path doesn’t end on the mountain.

It begins there.

Zen understood this centuries ago.

The final Ox-Herding Picture isn’t called escaping the world.

It’s called:

Entering the Marketplace with Helping Hands.

That’s the whole journey.

You come down the mountain.

Not because you’ve lost the silence…

but because you’ve become it.

You don’t need everyone else to calm down anymore.

You carry another centre.

People will still shout.

The world will still be divided.

Someone will still misunderstand you.

Someone will still betray you.

Someone will still suffer.

The question is no longer,

“How do I escape this?”

The question becomes,

“How do I meet this?”

That’s what a bridge does.

It doesn’t choose one side.

It allows life to move through it.

It stands in the middle without becoming the conflict itself.

So here’s your final practice.

Today…

be the calmest person in every room you enter.

Not because you’re pretending.

Because you’ve stopped needing life to be different before you can love.

When someone brings anger…

don’t return anger.

When someone brings fear…

don’t multiply fear.

When someone brings certainty…

bring curiosity.

When someone brings division…

bring your full humanity.

Then, before you walk into your day…

stop for one breath.

Open your hands.

And say:

Here I am. Send me.

Not because the world needs another spiritual person.

It needs more people who have remembered who they are.
