The Sacred Disappearance

Look at how badly you want to matter.

You want to be remembered.
Recognised.
Respected.
Seen.

Even your insecurity revolves around you.

Your imposter syndrome isn’t humility.

It’s still self-obsession.

You’re still standing in front of the mirror asking,

“What do people think of me?”

It’s exhausting.

You spend your whole life trying to become somebody.

Jesus spends his whole life showing you how to disappear.

Paul writes:

“Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus… who emptied himself…”

He emptied himself.

That’s the word.

Kenosis.

Not becoming more.

Becoming less.

The world teaches you to build an identity.

The Gospel slowly dismantles it.

Christ doesn’t arrive demanding recognition.

He washes feet.

He touches lepers.

He disappears into ordinary life.

And somehow…

that’s where glory is found.

Paul understands this so deeply that he writes:

“It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.”

Don’t rush past that.

He doesn’t say,

“I’ve become a better version of myself.”

He says,

“The self I was defending isn’t running the show anymore.”

What if that’s the invitation?

Not becoming a more impressive version of yourself.

But finally becoming free of yourself.

Zen points in exactly the same direction.

A monk asks for the secret of enlightenment.

The master replies,

“Have you eaten your rice?”

“Yes.”

“Then wash your bowl.”

That’s it.

No performance.
No specialness.
No audience.

Just this moment.

Completely.

The old masters spoke of the Great Death.

Not the death of the body.

The death of the one who constantly needs to be somebody.

Imagine waking up tomorrow…

with no need to impress anyone.

No need to prove yourself.
No need to win.
No need to leave a mark.

How much energy would suddenly become available for love?

So here’s your practice.

Today…

do something beautiful.

And tell no one.

Help someone.
Give something away.
Clean what isn’t yours to clean.
Forgive someone who’ll never know.

Then keep your mouth shut.

Don’t post it.

Don’t hint at it.

Don’t secretly hope someone notices.

Let it disappear.

Then notice what remains…

when nobody is clapping.

Maybe that’s who you’ve been all along.
